Your home is your sanctuary—a place to rest, recharge, and spend time with loved ones. But what if I told you that many common household products could be contributing to an unhealthy environment? From artificial fragrances to harmful chemicals found in cleaning supplies, toxins can sneak into our homes in ways we might not even realize.

Don’t worry, detoxifying your home doesn’t have to be overwhelming! Here are five simple ways to make your living space healthier and safer for your family.

1. Choose Non-Toxic Cleaning Products

Most commercial cleaning products contain chemicals like ammonia, chlorine, and phthalates, which can irritate your skin, eyes, and lungs. Many also contain hormone disrupting chemicals that can interfere with your body's natural processes and even fertility. Switching to non-toxic, homemade cleaners or eco-friendly store-bought options is one of the easiest ways to detoxify your home.

DIY Tip: Make an all-purpose cleaner using ingredients you probably already have at home! Mix equal parts of water and white vinegar, then add a few drops of essential oils like lemon or tea tree for fragrance and antibacterial properties. Use this to clean counter tops, appliances, and even glass. This type of cleaner works well AND will save you money!

2. Swap Out Synthetic Candles

We all love the cozy ambiance of candles, but many big-brand candles are made with paraffin wax, which can release harmful chemicals like benzene and toluene into the air when burned. These compounds contribute to indoor air pollution and chronic health conditions, making your home less healthy.

Instead, opt for candles made from natural, non-toxic ingredients like organic soy wax or beeswax. My line of non-toxic, organic candles is crafted from the purest materials, ensuring you can enjoy the warm glow of candlelight without the worry of petrochemicals.

3. Ditch the Artificial Air Fresheners

Sprays, plug-ins, and synthetic air fresheners may seem like a quick way to freshen up your space, but they often contain chemicals that disrupt your hormones and contribute to respiratory issues. Even products labeled as "natural" or "green" can be misleading if they contain hidden toxins.

An excellent alternative is to use essential oils in a diffuser or make your own room spray using water, witch hazel, and your favorite essential oils like lavender, eucalyptus, or citrus. These natural options will leave your home smelling fresh without compromising air quality.

4. Be Mindful of Your Furniture and Decor

Did you know that certain furniture and home decor items can off-gas harmful chemicals? Many pieces of furniture are treated with flame retardants and other chemicals that release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air over time. Carpets, paints, and varnishes can also contribute to poor indoor air quality.

To minimize this, look for furniture made from untreated, natural materials like solid wood, and choose VOC-free paints when redecorating. If new furniture isn’t in the budget, opening windows and using plants that purify the air—like spider plants, peace lilies, and snake plants—can help improve the air in your home.

5. Filter Your Tap Water

Whether you're on municipal ("city") water or a private well, it's a good idea to test your water supply. I use this test kit on our half-acre homestead. It comes with 100 strips that test instantly for 17 different compounds, and it has two bacteria test kits.

Many municipal water supplies contain contaminants like chlorine, fluoride, lead, or pesticides that can negatively affect your health. Investing in a good water filtration system is one of the best steps you can take to ensure the water you drink and cook with is clean and toxin-free.

Look for filters that remove a wide range of contaminants, or if you’re feeling DIY-savvy, consider creating your own natural water filtration system at home using activated charcoal and sand layers (I'll work on a post that talks more about that in the future). You’ll notice a difference in taste and quality!
